Seminars for educational The following seminars for educational and health professionals convey compelling and timely research with information on state-of-the-art, sophisticated interventions. Each seminar is guaranteed to improve teaching and counseling in schools. The small group concept (not more than ten) enables participants to bring questions and concerns for discussion. Seminars are a mixture of lecture, group activity, small group exercises and videos. Seminar director Dr. Anita Remig is a psychologist and national lecturer in the areas of communication, learning disorders and counseling The Seminars: A. Language and Communication Skills This seminar provides research and practical information on how to talk to children and adolescents. The development of phonology, semantics, syntax, discourse and pragmatics is described. New research on child and teen communication is identified along with strategies for parent and teacher dialogues. Healing and therapeutic interventions are explained and practiced. Each participant receives a complimentary copy of Talk To Me, Mom and Dad by Dr. Remig. B. Learning Disabilities and Interventions Current, cutting-edge information on how to define, diagnose and treat learning disabilities will be presented. Theories of learning disabilities are described and methods of assessment and diagnosis are presented. Current legislation concerning learning disabilities coding and special education are addressed. Specific interventions are elaborated for dyslexia, memory, mental inactivation, superficial processing, weak energy and production control and dysgraphia. C. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD is examined as it relates to executive functioning, school learning, motivation and comorbid disorders. Exciting new research is described and strategies for remediating ADHD are offered. This seminar is designed to update professionals in the area of ADHD and its relationship to motivation. This diagnosis is being described as a disorder of the basal ganglia involving arousal, incentive, motor and cognitive impairment. ADHD is a neurobiological disorder where children and adults struggle with impulse control and inhibitory modulation as a chronic, life-long condition. What educators can do to assist children with ADHD to grow into adults who can achieve in relationships and careers is the focus of this seminar. D. Pervasive Developmental Disorder: Autism, Retts, Child Disintegrative and Aspergers Disorder Rates of PDD are epidemic according to the CDC. Teachers, therapists and parents need to understand the nature of this disorder and the essential methods for treatment. There are skill-based procedures (behavior management, discreet trials, skill building) and there are social-pragmatic methods (joint activity, childs lead, dialogue-based). It is critical to know how and when to use different methods and how to plan a specific treatment protocol for individual children. Daily schedules and programs will be explained and ample practice with new strategies will be offered. E. The Working Brain What do educators need to know about the brain and learning? Neuroscientists estimate that 90% of what is known about brain functioning has been learned since 1990. Catch up to current trends in brain research. Learn about how the brain perceives and stores information and how to create and maintain a healthy brain. This seminar describes how to use new brain research in teaching and mental health practice. Emphasis is on how to use the mass of new cognitive neuropsychological data coming in. F. Psychopharmacology The use of medicine can be extremely helpful for children and adults. This seminar dispels some of the current myths about medication and provides a scientific basis for the way medicines work. The most recent data available for the neuroprotective effects of medicine will be described with an emphasis on which medicines help and which do not. G. Current Topics In Childhood Developmental Disorder If you need a quick, daylong up-date on research in childhood disorders, this seminar will take you through a tour of the right hemispheric brain disorders currently afflicting children. There are clear and evident increases among all the childhood disorders; thus, an explanation of the causes will be offered. Interventions strategies will be interwoven throughout each topic. Topics include: PDD, Childhood Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Tic, Tourettes, OCD, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disabilities and Dysgraphia.
